The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently encouraged all health care workers to get an annual flu vaccine to protect themselves, their families and patients from the virus. In August, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) adopted a policy calling for flu vaccination of health care personnel as a condition of employment or receipt of professional privileges. SHEA and the Infectious Diseases Society of America have urged HHS to adopt the policy.
