The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently released the first National Preparedness Goal, which sets forth a national vision for preparedness and core capabilities to achieve it. The goal focuses on prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery. Response capabilities include providing emergency medical services and public health and medical support to people in affected areas, while recovery capabilities include restoring and improving health and social service networks. In March, President Obama directed the Department of Homeland Security secretary to develop the goal as well as a national preparedness system.
