The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month recommended manufacturers take steps to make computed tomography (CT) equipment safer for patients. In a letter to the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance, which represents makers of CT scanners and other imaging devices, the FDA called for a console notification to alert equipment operators prior to a high-radiation dose. Among other changes, the agency recommended manufacturers give all facilities receiving base CT equipment information and training on brain perfusion protocols. In January, the FDA provided interim recommendations to imaging facilities to help prevent excess exposure to radiation during CT perfusion imaging of the brain.
