The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) Standards Council has approved new Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) regarding the use of antifreeze in sprinkler systems, according to a report in the American Society for Healthcare Engineering's ASHE Insider e-newsletter. TIAs for NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, require the use of a listed antifreeze solution for all new systems. The listing must indicate that the solution will not ignite when discharged from a sprinkler. A TIA also has been approved for NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. That TIA phases out traditional antifreeze solutions by 2022 and establishes thresholds for antifreeze solutions found in existing systems.
