From bottlenecks in emergency departments to communication breakdowns between departments and lengthy walks down long corridors, hospitals are dealing with daily inefficiencies that can impact patient care, staff performance and their own bottom lines. Health Facilities Management in cooperation with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering conducted the 2017 Hospital Construction Survey with a special focus on how hospitals that plan to launch new construction or renovation projects are involving staff in the design process to address inefficiencies, improve patient care and adapt space to a facility’s changing needs.

An expert panel will comment on the findings and discuss:

  • Use of direct observation studies, rapid prototype mockup/testing events, 3-D models and simulation to help improve processes
  • Smart ways and a comprehensive approach to right-size the facility without sacrificing patient safety or health
  • Creative solutions for top barriers
  • Ways to incorporate adaptability in design during the current climate of uncertainty in health care
  • Key features designed to improve communication and patient flow
