The Joint Commission Online e-newsletter recently published a series of compliance and safety articles on medical gas systems in hospitals and other types of health care facilities. The first, which appeared in the Nov. 28 issue, concentrated on piped systems and covered inspection, testing and maintenance; breached and modified systems; clear and unobstructed access; labeling; and discrete location of valves. A follow-up article in the Dec. 5 issue of Joint Commission Online covered storage of freestanding medical gas cylinders and one in the Dec. 12 issue covered medical gas for home care organizations. The articles can be accessed via the Joint Commission Online's archived issues.
