Facility: Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital
Location: Hershey, Pa.
Designer: Albert Paley

The Promise, a steel sculpture by artist Albert Paley, stands in the garden in front of the new Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, which commissioned the 40-foot-high artwork to serve as a focal point for hospital visitors. The building opened to patients in February.

The sculpture was designed so that each time a child looks at it, he or she might see new features like a fish or a bird, depending on individual perspectives and vantage points.

"The sculpture acts as a humanistic symbol of the passage of time, of the human condition, of expectations for a positive outcome," Paley says about his work. The whimsical nature of the sculpture's elements strive to produce a sense of wonder and curiosity in all who see it, he says.
