Joint Commission clarifies hospital fire safety revision

The Joint Commission has revised EC.02.03.05 element of participation (EP) 2 regarding fire protection systems in hospitals to ensure that it is equivalent to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation. The revision to the EP changes the time frame for water-flow devices in automatic sprinkler systems from every six months to quarterly. A previous notification had indicated that the change in time frame was to apply to both water-flow devices and tamper switches. However, it since has been determined that the change should only have applied to water-flow devices.
