An international standard on risk management for networks incorporating medical devices was approved last month by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). IEC 80001-1, which has been in development for nearly four years, tells health care organizations how they can manage risk and consider potential impacts on patient safety in an environment in which more medical devices are being hooked up to information technology networks.
