The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) in October told its members it is collecting information to help quantify the resources wasted by health care facilities to comply with multiple codes and standards as they are applied by multiple authorities having jurisdiction as well as the lack of consistent enforcement of facility regulations. Toward that end, ASHE also posted on its website a page to report misapplied codes and standards anonymously. "It is estimated that health care organizations spend between $2 billion and $4 billion each year trying to comply with unjustified enforcement or conflicting codes and standards," ASHE says.
