Cyberattacks target refrigeration and freezer systems

Confirmed reports from the Department of Defense and foreign supermarket chains signal a wider risk to crucial equipment found in many healthcare facilities
|

The Department of Defense confirmed that a half-dozen commissaries on military bases in the continental United States reported refrigeration outages in late August.

These outages seem similar to those reported earlier this month at hundreds of European supermarkets that were caused by cyberattacks targeting Danfoss AK-SM 800A and Copeland XWeb Pro platforms.

Organizations that use these controllers or platforms for their refrigeration or freezer systems should conduct an evaluation to ensure that these controllers or platforms are not operating on public networks and are safely protected behind a secure firewall.

The cybersecurity firm Claroty released a deep dive detailing vulnerabilities found in Danfoss refrigeration controllers. The report offers insights on how organizations, including healthcare systems, can protect equipment operating on the Danfoss platform from cyberattacks.
