IAHSS updates, releases new security guidelines

The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) released two new guidelines and updated one guideline. Healthcare Security Industry Guideline 05.12, Human Trafficking in Healthcare, provides a clear definition of human trafficking and supports health care organizations in identifying victims and responding appropriately. Healthcare Security Industry Guideline 04.05, Weapons Detection, identifies different types of weapons detection systems, placement considerations for these systems, staffing, and deployment plans and processes. IAHSS also updated Healthcare Security Industry Guideline 06.03, Executive Protection Program.

ASHE leader appointed to NFPA committee

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Health Care Section’s Executive Board appointed Leah Hummel, AIA, CHFM, CHC, CHOP-B, SASHE, senior associate director of regulatory affairs at the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), to secretary of the NFPA Health Care Section Codes and Standards Review Committee. NFPA’s Health Care Section is comprised of health care professionals from across the field who discuss and disseminate information on pressing issues facing health care to exchange ideas and solve problems.

NFPA issues errata for fire protection code

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) issued an errata for the 2026 edition of NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection. Errata No. 25-26-1 includes revisions to correct errors in section four of the standard. The revisions pertain to requirements for corrosion mitigation systems; for mitigating impairments, critical deficiencies and noncritical deficiencies in water-based fire protection systems; and to correct reference numbers in the standard. The errata was issued Oct. 7.

ASHE task force evaluates ASHRAE standard

The American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) has established the Impact Analysis Task Force, a multidisciplinary group tasked with assessing the financial implications of American National Standards Institute/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 189.3-2021, Design, Construction, and Operation of Sustainable High-Performance Health Care Facilities, and other sustainability standards affecting health care facilities. Its primary objective is to identify which Standard 189.3 requirements go beyond baseline codes and evaluate the financial impact of those requirements. The group has completed its first goal: a line-by-line review of the standard to pinpoint cost impacts. Work is now underway on the second goal to recommend revisions to the standard that would ease compliance for facilities with very limited financial resources.
