NFPA weekly update: Sept. 28 to Oct. 2

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manages more than 300 codes and works with more than 250 technical committees in its codes and standards development process. Below is a list of NFPA committee happenings for the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 2. 

Tentative interim amendments

NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code®. The committee is soliciting public comments on a proposed tentative interim amendments (TIAs) submitted to the code’s 2026 edition. TIA No. 1949 seeks to modify requirements related to modular data centers. The TIA is posted under the current and prior editions tab, and public commenting closes Oct. 30. 

The committee also issued TIAs 26-9, 26-10, 26-11 and 26-12. The TIAs are posted under the current and prior editions tab. 

NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. The committee is soliciting public comments on proposed TIA No. 1957 to the code’s 2027 edition, which seeks to modify requirements related to copper piping for medical gas systems. The TIA is posted under the current and prior editions tab, and public commenting closes Oct. 30.

The committee also issued TIAs 24-3, 27-1 and 27-2. The TIAs are posted under the current and prior editions tab. 

NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code. The committee is soliciting public comments on proposed TIA No. 1959 to the code’s 2027 edition, which seeks to modify requirements related to steel construction. The TIA is posted under the current and prior editions tab, and public commenting closes Oct. 30.

Ballots and reports

NFPA 22, Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection, 2028 edition. The standard’s first draft report is open for public comment, with comments due Jan. 6, 2027. The committee also posted the first draft ballot, which includes public inputs with comments, committee input, first revision report and final ballot results. NFPA 204, Standard for Smoke and Heat Venting, 2027 edition. The standard’s second draft report is posted under the next edition tab in the second draft committee information section. 

NFPA 780, Standard for the Installation of Lighting Protection Systems, 2029 edition. The final draft ballot for TIA No. 1899 regarding grounding requirements for metallic fences. The TIA is posted under the next edition tab in the other committee information section.
