Marian Regional Medical Center, Santa Maria, Calif., is part of Dignity Health and is a sole-provider hospital serving the growing population in the surrounding California central coast.

The existing patient rooms at Marian were more than 40 years old, semiprivate and in desperate need of replacement. The new 239,560-square-foot expansion provides 181 new state-of-the-art inpatient beds and a larger emergency department.

The main entrance design is a response to the surrounding Mission Revival style of architecture prevalent throughout Santa Maria and indigenous to the central coast of California. Two iconic monumental towers rise above the four-story facade and articulate the medical center's primary access.

Recognizable features typical of this vernacular include such elements as enclosed courtyards, limited fenestration and door openings, clay tile roofs, bell gables, exterior arcades, and arches springing from integral columns.
