Facility: Susquehanna Cancer Center
Location: Williamsport, Pa.
Architect: Granary Associates (now Stantec), Philadelphia

Equipped with a library of books and computer workstations, the new education resource area at Susquehanna Health's Susquehanna Cancer Center in Williamsport, Pa., provides a place for patients, visitors and staff to utilize resources about health topics, including a wide variety of cancers and various treatment options.

The two-story space provides views to the exterior and incorporates large amounts of natural light into its design. A floral motif on the upper windows creates diffused light and enforces the theme of nature found throughout the entire Cancer Center. This motif can also be seen from an exterior healing garden located adjacent to the education resource area at the second level.

Located off the main lobby of the Cancer Center, the space is used as a gathering place for seminars in the adjacent conference rooms and a waiting area as it provides clear views to the patient drop-off and pickup zone.

The education resource area was a new addition to the existing Cancer Center. Additional square footage for the area was creatively captured from exterior spaces with existing roof canopies allowing the designers to expand the overall size of the Cancer Center while reducing the cost of construction for the project.
