The final rule, which aims to address conflicts of interest and the need for standardized processes, is open for public comment until Aug. 17

On June 16, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule open for public comment that sets forth provisions to strengthen the oversight of CMS-approved national accrediting organizations (AOs). The final rule specifically addresses CMS concerns regarding conflicts of interest; establishing consistent standards, processes and definitions; and updating the validation and performance standards systems for AOs.

Comments to the final rule, including mass comment submissions, must be submitted by August 17, 2026. The final rule will go into effect June 16, 2027. For additional information see the CMS Publication of the Strengthening Oversight of Accrediting Organizations (AOs) (CMS-3367-FC) Final Rule with Comment Period webpage.
