NFPA weekly update: Sept. 22-26

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manages more than 300 codes and works with more than 250 technical committees in its codes and standards development process. Below is a list of NFPA committee happenings for the week of Sept. 22-26.  

Reports, final ballots and TIAs

NFPA 55, Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code. The second draft report for the 2026 edition is open for the notice of intent to make a motion process. The motioning closing date is Oct. 31.

NFPA 70B, Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance. The second draft report for the 2026 edition is open for the notice of intent to make a motion process. The motioning closing date is Oct. 31.

NFPA 85, Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code. The first draft report for the 2027 edition is open for public comment. The commenting closing date is Jan. 6, 2026. The committee also posted a new tentative interim amendment (TIA) for the 2023 edition under the current and prior editions tab. TIA 23-1 was issued Aug. 20.

NFPA 101A, Guide on Alternative Approaches to Life Safety. The final first draft ballot for the guide’s 2028 edition is posted under the next editions tab in the first draft committee information section.

NFPA 204, Standard for Smoke and Heat Venting. The first draft report for the 2027 edition is open for public comment. The commenting closing date is Jan. 6, 2026.

NFPA 731, Standard for the Installation of Premises Security Systems. The second draft report for the 2026 edition is open for the notice of intent to make a motion process. The motioning closing date is Oct. 31.

Meeting notices and minutes

NFPA 17, Standard for Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems. A second draft meeting notice for an upcoming Oct. 22 meeting to discuss the code’s 2027 edition. The notice is posted under the next edition tab in the second draft committee information section.

NFPA 17A, Standard for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems. A second draft meeting notice for an upcoming Oct. 22 meeting to discuss the code’s 2027 edition. The notice is posted under the next edition tab in the second draft committee information section.

NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code®. The committee posted first draft meeting minutes from its July 1 and July 28-31 meetings where it discussed the standard’s 2028 edition. The minutes are posted under the next edition tab in the first draft committee information section.

NFPA 96, Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations. The committee posted second draft meeting minutes from its Sept. 8 meeting where it discussed the standard’s 2027 edition. The minutes are posted under the next edition tab in the second draft committee information section.

NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code. The committee posted pre-first draft meeting minutes from its Sept. 19 meeting where it discussed the code’s 2028 edition. The minutes are posted under the next edition tab in the first draft committee information section.
